MMA-KO First
off it’s great to have you at MMA-KO
J.S. Yeah Yeah for sure.
MMA-KO How
did you originally get into mma?
J.S. Originally I started honestly with wrestling to begin with
so that was kind of the start of it, I use to watch it,
something I was interested in but never did, & then I lived down
south, first of all ,I was wrestling down there, this guy asked
Chuck Liddell who obviously everyone knows now, he was just
getting started in the UFC & he opened a little gym, I seen the
guy I figured I could take him so I went in there to work out
with him, & got my ass kicked & got hooked from there. Started
training doing a few fights, once I progressed I moved up to
Cesar Gracie, started training with Nick Diaz & those guys. I
been doing really well lately.
MMA-KO What
is your favorite fighting style?
J.S. Probably Jujitsu, that’s really what I fell in love, well
wrestling first it was actually, but once I started jujitsu I
just loved it, really got into it all the submission, a lot of
tournaments, and from there I do a lot of boxing, Muay Thai too,
my last 2 fights haven’t really had to showcase it, but I got
some stand up skills too that I am sure I will use them
eventually.
MMA-KO When
you need them you can handle them but until then…
J.S. Yeah exactly it’s been working these last 2 fights, taping
these guys out, so I figure might as well stick to that move for
now. I definitely want to get some knock outs pretty soon too,
to show the world I can strike too, a lot of people don’t know
yet.
MMA-KO But
when you are on the ground with them it’s almost like they
scared to get with you on the ground, they are afraid that if
they go down with you it’s almost like they can’t get out of it,
almost like they know they will end up taping.
J.S.Yeah exactly nobody wants to go to the ground with me right
now, so I figure keep it there for now. Until they learn to stop
my take down then I will start punching them in the face.
MMA-KO How
do you prepare for a fight?
J.S. I train hard, non stop, I train year round, but then closer
to the fight the more training I do, I don’t have an exact
schedule week to week, but it’s pretty much I do jujitsu
probably about 5 times a week, do sparing with boxing & kick
boxing 3 times a week, mma sparing little gloves a couple of
times, & top of that pad work with the boxing & then we got
lifting & running & stuff too. I train usually twice a day
sometimes 3 times counting the running & stuff.
MMA-KO Your
life revolves around fighting?
J.S. My life totally revolves around fighting. Luckily I make
enough money where I don’t have to work, so that definitely
helps. My whole day, I wake up, go train, come back, get some
good food, get a little bit of rest, & go back & train again.
MMA-KO What
was the most powerful moment ever in a fight?
J.S. Nothing really comes to head right off, probably the best
one for me was I guess when I first beat Hayato Sakurai years
ago, because I was pretty much no name back then, I beat a guy
that was second in the world at the time. For me that was a
great experience but since then I had a lot of great victories,
they pretty much all feel good.
MMA-KO You
won like 8 in a row?
J.S. I have run off 9 in a row, I beat some good guys, Dave
Menne, Carlos Candit & Yashim Okami. I got some good wins in the
last few.
MMA-KO They
are all falling as they come up
J.S. Exactly I am taking them all out. That’s my plan to keep
doing it too, keep training hard, I love fighting, I love to get
paid to do it, it’s great to get paid to do what I love. I was
doing this for free & all of a sudden I was able to turn it into
a job, what more can I ask for.
MMA-KO The
last couple of fights I seen on TV. it’s almost like you have so
much to you, it’s done before we can see the real Jake Shields
because once they go down they tap. The last 2 fights you fought
a total of 3 minute?
J.S. Yea Yea, there were basically about 3 minutes each, but not
very long, and the 2 fights before that, I think were about a
minute & a half each, so I definitely can’t complain. That’s
been my style, trying to work there, working on finishing people
fast, be as aggressive as I can. To out there breaking people’s
spirits & right now it’s working. I am constantly trying to
learn new things too, finding new ways to beat people. Got a
good team, that’s help, guys like Nick Diaz, good friend of
mine, unfortunately his fight didn’t go well the other night,
but he still is a great fighter, got him behind me, got Nate,
Gilbert Melendez, got a solid team and that definitely helps.
MMA-KO How
did you feel about the Nick Diaz fight?
J.S. Nick was pissed off, he wanted to fight, he had some pretty
bad cuts, but he still wanted to fight, he could see everything
was fine but unfortunately the doctor said it was over & that
point, there isn’t much you can do.
MMA-KO He
will get a rematch?
J.S. I think he will. They will bounce him out, he will win his
next one & he will be right back in there and I think he will
beat the crap out of the guy in the rematch. K.J. is a good
fighter but I think he really got lucky on that one, he landed
solid shots but I think Nick will take the rematch.
MMA-KO Nick
bleeds but doesn’t get hurt?
J.S. Unfortunately he cuts easy, he has a lot of scar tissue
under his eyes, that’s unfortunate but Nick will never quit the
fight. He’s one tuff fucker. He’s representing the 209 for you
guys. The fight definitely could of gone but it’s like what are
you going to say when the doctor says to stop, not much you can
really do, it’s unfortunate. He tried arguing with him but he
said, no it’s over. Nick was pissed, flipping off the camera, he
was pissed in the back room, I had to calm him down a little
bit. He’s just an emotional fighter that’s who he is, it’s his
passion. It’s like we train so hard & to go out there and have
it taken away when you don’t fill like the fight is over, it’s
not easy to deal with.
MMA-KO Name
3 people in the fight industry that inspire you?
J.S. Chuck Liddell, he was the first guy I started training
with, unfortunately he’s coming off loses, but still he inspires
me. My teammates Nick & Gill, those are the main guys, they help
me, I help them.
MMA-KO Do
you have any pre fight rituals?
J.S. No not really, I kind of do the same thing, nothing too
crazy, kind of just relax all day, when it’s fight time get to
the dressing room, kind of laze around till about an hour before
the fight, I get taped up start warming up, get a good hard warm
up, get myself siked up, go out there at fight time, kick some
ass. Go out there get it done, get out, get paid & start
partying.
MMA-KO When
& where is your next fight?
J.S. I’m not really sure exactly when & where, most likely it’s
going to be Elite XC again, I signed with them it was a non
exclusive contract, but I think be sometime in February, that
isn’t 100% yet.
MMA-KO Tell
me one thing about yourself that your fans wouldn’t suspect?
J.S. I am a vegetarian, a lot of people already know that though
I think, but people that don’t usually get pretty surprised cuz
I’m one of the few fighters in good shape & a vegetarian.
MMA-KO Do
you have a manager?
J.S. My dad is my manger right now with Cesar Gracie, & my dad
has been helping out. Cesar Gracie is the main trainer and my
teammates, we all help each other too.
MMA-KO What
is the one thing you want people to know about Jake Shields?
J.S. That I am out there to fight, I love fighting, I go out
there & destroy people. Nice guy outside the ring but in the
cage I am all business.
MMA-KO Is
there anyone you’d like to thank?
J.S. My sponsors Fairtex, Serious Pimp, Alfa Dog, Sprawl &
Dominance, And all my teammates, the guys behind me, Gilbert
Melendez, Tareq Azim, Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz & all the rest of the
Gracie camp.
MMA-KO
Anything you would like to say in closing?
J.S. I’d like to thank all the fans for their support. Keep
watching me fight, I’ll keep training, trying to kick ass |
