PURECOMBAT: CHAMPIONS
FOR CHILDREN By Mark Brill/Patty Gallion
Champions
for Children was a good show, but there was only one championship
fight. Some big fights fell through, making the event nine total
bouts for the evening. The crowd seemed to stroll in a little beyond
the start time. The first six fights were just average fights but
I’ve got to say, the last three fights were awesome! Amazing!
Exciting! The people that did not show up missed a good show. The
first fight of the night was Joey De La Cruz versus Raul Sandoval.
It was a
very competitive fight.
Both fighters came out with Raul getting the take downs on Joey but
never really
working while on the ground. The second round Joey was able to land
some nice shots, but Raul continued to control the takedowns, and as
this fight moved into third round, Raul controlled the takedowns
again causing this fight to be a decision. Surprise, the judges came
up with a split decision and gave this fight to Joey De La Cruz,
which was a disaster, as there was no way he won this fight in my
opinion. The second fight was Dominic Clark versus Rafael Urena as
this fight started, Dominic was a beast and a killer, dominating
this fight and getting an easy rear naked choke at 1:20 in the very
first round. It was an easy win for Dominic giving Rafael his first
defeat in MMA.
The
third fight of the night was Moses Lira versus Josh Miranda. As
these two fighters came out, feeling each other out and making an
interesting fight, Moses was having a difficult time with Josh, as
Josh was able to get the better of the two, pushing this into the
second round. Phil “The Pain” Collins was yelling at Moses to get
back to his feet, and Moses ended up caught in an arm bar giving
Josh a victory in the second round.
The fourth fight of the night was Cole Nagy versus Daniel Price. As
these two guys came out, attacking, but this was the most boring
fight of the night, with Daniel Price dominating the fight getting
an easy unanimous decision over Cole Nagy.
The fifth fight of the night was Anthony Vidal versus Eddie Mendez.
As Anthony came out he wanted to make quick work of Eddie, and he
did just that, dominating the fight and sinking in a guillotine
choke at 1:25 in the very first round. Anthony looked great and
improved his record to 2-2.
The
sixth fight of the night was Josh Herrick versus Todd Willingham.
This fight was pretty entertaining to watch, with Josh trying to get
the better of Todd, but Todd came back in this one and scored some
takedowns, as Rhino in Josh’s corner, was yelling at him “Stick
you’re jab out”! We now go to the scorecards and another bad
decision tonight as Josh gets the nod on a split decision. Todd now
falls to 2-7 and Josh moves up to 6-1.
The seventh fight of the night was the most “holy shit” fight of the
night. John Reedy, who we have not seen in awhile, and last time I
watched him fight, Jeff
Sherwood told me this kid is awesome. Reedy was back versus Preston
Scharf, who was giving Reedy a fight, until Reedy caught him and
they went to the ground. Reedy was able to get an elbow in that
stunned Scharf badly, then another punch came in knocking Sharf
cold, and Reedy
in the heat of the moment, with the ref getting in too late, was
able to land two more death punches, putting Scharf on a stretcher,
and giving Reedy the biggest KO of his career. Reedy improved his
record to 10-3. Expect this kid to be at Tachi or another Pure
Combat show. KO of the night!
The
eighth fight of the night was the Co-Main Event with Rob Emerson
versus Rodney Rhoden. These two guys came out banging and landing
some good kicks. You can see the difference in
fighters who have been to the big stage compared to fighters who
have not. Rob knew he needed to end it quick, and he did just that,
as he was able to ground and pound Rhoden to a TKO victory
3:33 into the very first round. Very good fight.
The MAIN EVENT of the night was the best fight of the night, if not
the fight of the year. Tony “El Cucui” Ferguson versus Brock “The
Machine” Jardine. These two guys were absolute warriors. From the
beginning bell they were feeling each other out, and starting to
strike every punch with power. Tony got caught and wobbled by Brock,
with Brock jumping on him thinking to end it, but Tony came
back
striking. We move into the second round, and Tony is now striking at
will, and landing the heavier strikes, winning the second round. We
now move into the third round, and these guys are going at it again.
You can start to see Brock beginning to tire, and Tony is getting
stronger. We move into the fourth round, and Tony came out blazing
and wanting to end this fight, as he did so,
Brock was not able to respond back to the ref, as the ref stopped
the fight 2:35 into the fourth round and Tony became the new
Welterweight Champion for Pure Combat. What an awesome fight. All in
all this was a good show and a lot of people missed out!
